Message Pick: Self-Control in a Wired World

joshharris“A little web surfing, a little Facebook, a little folding of the hands around your smart phone and spiritual poverty will come like a robber…”

Where do you need self-control? Does living in a wired world distract you from pursuing God and serving him? In this clip Josh Harris of Covenant Life Church describes an all-too-familiar moment of e-mail, blog, Facebook, Twitter distraction. This message is part of his Proverbs series, and is based on Proverbs 25:28.

The sluggard lacks the self-control to do what needs to be done when it needs to be done. This sermon helps us identify the things that keep us busy but are really wasting time that should be spent on more important priorities.

Click here to listen to the whole audio message.

Pastor Harris also wrote some thinking points about the sermon on his blog:

Yesterday I preached a sermon about self-control from Proverbs 25:28 that says, “A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.” I focused on the issue of media, the internet, and today’s new technologies. I don’t think I’m the only person who would identify this as an area where it’s easy to lack self-control. I think a lot of us we could rephrase the words of Proverbs 24:33-34 about the sluggard and say, “A little web surfing, a little Facebook, a little folding of the hands around the smart phone and spiritual poverty will come upon you like a robber.”

Pastor Don Devries wrote up some application questions based on the sermon that I think are good:
1. What things are you tempted to do instead of what you should be doing? What do you fill your time with that crowds out activity of eternal value?

2. Have you feasted so much at the table of the world that your hunger for the Lord (Matthew 5:6) has diminished and your first love (Revelation 2:4) has grown cold? What can you do to rekindle that love and hunger?

3. What allowable and permissible pursuits have you allowed to rob you of your service to God’s church and His kingdom? What would change look like?

4. What things have crowded your life that keep you from fruitfulness (like time in God’s word, prayer, fellowship, evangelism, etc.)? What steps of repentance do you need to take to begin the process of change?

5. Paul writes in Ephesians 5:15-16a “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time…” How can you cultivate wisdom in your use of time? How can you put the eternal pursuits above the trivial?

The Armor of God

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.

Ephesians 6:10-18 (New International Version)

In Review: BeBe and CeCe Winans “Still”

bebeandcecestill

cecestillStill the new album from BeBe and CeCe Winans is finally available on October 6. Their first album together in fifteen years, Still features 12 uplifting songs that merge the duo’s classic sounds with contemporary flair.

A resounding favorite is the single “Close To You,” a heartfelt ballad that could reflect both an earthly love and that of a relationship with God. CeCe
speaks on the double meaning of the song saying:

“Bebe is a romantic writer and people don’t equate that with gospel music. When you have an intimate relationship with the Father it’s sweet, it’s pure. It’s the ultimate love relationship. Love asks how can I serve you and how can I bless you while stating how much I need you. The safest place for me is being close to Him and even in the natural, it’s a safe place being with my brother.”

Lessons On Laughter: Part 2 of Q&A with Miz T – Gospel Comedienne

souldreamerinspiration
miztheader2

miztquote2Miz T shares how her passion for creating laughter has brought spiritual lessons into her life…

In the first part of the Q&A Tranea Prosser, also known as Miz T, shared how she discovered her passion to make others laugh and turned it into her ministry, and now she’s living out her God-given dreams. In part two Miz T gives some wisdom on supporting one another in ministry, advice for young people, and tips on embracing one’s unique calling. Read below for some of her lessons on laughter:

Dream in Soul: You’ve previously mentioned the importance of people mentoring each other, and pulling each other up to be successful. Can you say a little about this, and why it’s important for the community of God to support those who are upcoming and younger?

MizT: That gift of exhortation sure talks alot! Two years ago there were only two people doing Christian comedy in Austin. I reached out to him and invited him to my CD release program where he was introduced and he returned the invitation when he had a production. We are very supportive of each other and to each other in regards to the comedic ministry. The Word says that we are the body of Christ and are all equally important with our separate functions. We need to learn to appreciate everyone for their ministry gifts and not feel like competing against them.
